This move comes hot on the heels of the Delhi Police filing a First Information Report (FIR) related to the incident. The FIR was registered under sections 465 (forgery) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act. The case was transferred to the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit within the Delhi Police’s Special Cell following a complaint from the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

The DCW had taken suo-motu cognizance of the deepfake video that targeted Rashmika Mandanna. As part of the ongoing investigation, the IFSO unit has begun its technical analysis and sought access to the URL ID of the account responsible for generating and sharing the morphed video.

Delving deeper into the controversy, the viral deepfake video featured Rashmika Mandanna seemingly entering an elevator while dressed in a black body-hugging yoga suit, all while flashing a cheerful smile for the camera. Notably, the original video features social media influencer Zara Patel, whose face was digitally replaced with Rashmika’s in the deepfake version.

The incident has sparked important discussions surrounding the potential misuse and consequences of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the digital age. With a dedicated team of officers on the case, the authorities are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter. The investigation is expected to yield significant developments in the near future, shedding light on the accountability and implications of deepfake content in the digital sphere.
