Breaking Boundaries: Mammootty and Jyothika Tackle Taboos in Kaathal – The Core

The much-anticipated Mammootty and Jyothika-starrer, “Kaathal – The Core,” is causing a stir with its rumored plot that explores a sensitive and rarely addressed theme. Social media is abuzz with speculations following the leaked plot of this upcoming film, suggesting that Mammootty’s character, Mathew Devassy, may be portrayed as a closeted homosexual. The storyline takes an unexpected turn as his on-screen wife, portrayed by Jyothika, seeks a divorce upon discovering his sexual orientation.

Set to premiere at the International Film Festival of India, the film’s synopsis unveils Mammootty’s character, George Devassy, residing with his wife Omana (played by Jyothika), daughter Femi, and his father. The narrative pivots dramatically when, just two days after George announces his candidacy in the panchayat elections, Omana initiates divorce proceedings.

Contrary to the trailer’s hint at domestic abuse, the IFFI synopsis clarifies that Omana seeks a divorce based on George’s homosexual relationship, a reason she deems sufficient for ending their marriage. Despite potential ramifications on his political career, George vehemently denies the allegations. “Kaathal – The Core” delves into societal perspectives on homosexual relationships, the complexities of marriage, and the pursuit of justice.

This film marks another instance of Malayalam superstars portraying homosexual characters, following Prithviraj Sukumaran’s role in “Mumbai Police.” Mammootty, who portrayed a bigot in last year’s “Puzhu,” is anticipated to receive acclaim for embracing yet another distinctive role in “Kaathal – The Core.”

Director Jeo Baby, in a previous interview, emphasized the responsibility of directing Mammootty. The film, scheduled for screening in the Indian Panorama section at IFFI, is set for a global theatrical release on November 23, with Mammootty producing it under the banner of Mammootty Kampany.

Renowned for iconic films like “Mrigaya,” “Mathilukal,” “A Northern Story of Valor,” and “Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha,” Mammootty continues to push boundaries. Following his appearance in “Kannur Squad,” the actor is poised for an exciting lineup of upcoming films, including “Yatra 2,” “Bilal,” “Turbo,” “New York,” “Ameer,” “Bazooka,” and “Abraham Ozler,” showcasing his versatility and commitment to diverse roles.
