In a recent interview, the 37-year-old actor reflects on his profound connection with Shakespeare, stemming from his early days in a school play featuring the iconic playwright’s work.

Recalling his initial exposure to Shakespearean drama, Fazal shares, “It was the first time I was thrown on the stage, and I had nothing to do with literature or acting, but at that time, Shakespeare was happening. I remember starting my journey there.” He expresses his continuous search for similar depth in Hindi cinema and mentions finding it in the works of filmmaker-singer Vishal Bharadwaj, the director of Khufiya. Fazal emphasizes his constant desire to explore and discover such content throughout his acting career.

Despite his recent Hollywood projects, including Kandahar and Death on the Nile (2022), Fazal highlights the fundamental differences between Hollywood and Bollywood. He attributes these disparities to economic factors and the broader audience base in the West. According to Fazal, Hindi cinema represents only a part of Indian filmmaking, while his international projects cater to a global audience.

When questioned about the impact of this cross-industry switch on his craft, Fazal acknowledges the influence of every project on his skills. However, he confesses that the temptation lies in the exceptional content being produced in India, preventing him from permanently shifting his base outside the country. Fazal adds a personal touch, revealing, “I often get bored with myself. That’s why I end up finding and taking on different kinds of roles.”
