Akshay Kumar, the renowned Bollywood actor, has recently shared insights into his past Canadian citizenship and the reasons behind his decision to acquire it. In an interview with ANI, he shed light on his journey, explaining that he embraced Canadian citizenship during a challenging phase of his career.
Akshay disclosed that he pursued Canadian citizenship when his movies were facing a series of setbacks, with 13 to 14 films not performing well at the box office. During this period, a friend residing in Canada presented him with an opportunity to explore new ventures. This friend proposed engaging in cargo business together, to which Akshay agreed. Recognizing the importance of work during a professional low, Akshay embarked on a journey to Canada, eventually obtaining a Canadian passport.
The actor reflected on the circumstances leading to his Canadian citizenship, saying, “I became a Canadian because my films were not doing well at one time and I gave 13 to 14 flop films.” While in Toronto, he received word that two of his films, released during his Canadian sojourn, had remarkably transformed into huge successes. He decided to return to India, where his career gained momentum, ultimately leading him to his current stature. Despite the shift in citizenship, Akshay emphasized his commitment to paying taxes, proudly noting that he is among the highest taxpayers.
Regarding his recent return to Indian citizenship, Akshay highlighted the importance of not just holding a passport but also connecting with one’s roots. He explained, “It’s not just a passport, it’s your mind, it’s your heart, it’s your soul that has to be Indian. What is the point if I do have an Indian passport but my soul, mind, and heart are not Indian?” This sentiment underlines the deeper connection he feels to his homeland.
Akshay Kumar officially obtained Indian citizenship this year and celebrated the momentous occasion by sharing his government documents on Independence Day, expressing his patriotism with the caption, “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani (Heart and citizenship, both Indian). Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind.”
The actor has previously faced criticism on social media for holding Canadian citizenship, addressing the controversy in 2019. He expressed his bewilderment at the negativity surrounding the topic and affirmed his commitment to both nations.
Akshay Kumar’s journey from Canadian to Indian citizenship showcases his dedication to his craft and his homeland, illustrating that personal and professional growth often involves overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities, wherever they may be.
