Surge in Computer Engineering Enrollment, AISHE Report Highlights Educational Trends

The recent All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report, disclosed by the Ministry of Education, unveiled a significant surge in the enrollment of students in computer engineering.

According to the data released on Thursday night, there has been a remarkable 38% increase in the enrollment of students pursuing computer engineering over the last three years. In the academic year 2019-20, the count stood at 9.3 lakh, and it has surged to 12 lakh in 2021-22.

The top five branches of engineering, as outlined in the report, include Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Notably, only Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering have witnessed an upswing in enrollment, with a notable increase of 38.82% and a modest 1.44%, respectively. Conversely, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Civil Engineering reported declines of 15.45%, 0.81%, and 3.31%, respectively.

In the academic year 2021-22, Computer Engineering dominated with the highest enrollment at 12.9 lakh, followed by Electronics Engineering with 6 lakh enrollments. Additionally, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering reported enrollments of 5.74 lakh, 4.64 lakh, and 3.75 lakh, respectively.

Within the Science stream, a total of 57,18,185 students enrolled in UG, PG, MPhil, and PhD programs, with 52.1% being women. Notably, at the UG level, 50.8% of the 49,18,425 enrollments were women, while at the PG level, 61.2% of the 7,52,807 nominations were women. In the Science discipline at the PhD level, over 50% of the 45,324 enrollments were women.

The report also highlighted that at the postgraduate level, the Social Science stream attracted the maximum number of students (10.8 lakhs, with 56.6% being female), followed by Science and Management.

The Science discipline saw a total enrollment of 7.5 lakhs, with 61.2% being female students, while the Management stream reported a total enrollment of 7.3 lakhs, with 41.9% being female. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into the current educational landscape and the preferences of students across various disciplines.
