The release of the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) 2022 results marked a momentous occasion for Santosh Verma, bringing unparalleled joy and relief after years of perseverance through financial hardships. As reported by Career 360, Verma, who successfully cleared the exam on his first attempt, transitioned from his role as a security guard in Lucknow to realizing his long-held dream of becoming a lawyer.

Hailing from a small village in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, Verma’s early life was defined by financial challenges. Initiated into the workforce at the age of 16, he worked tirelessly as a security guard in Lucknow, including at the prestigious Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMLNLU). Despite facing acute financial distress, Verma pursued his education, completing his schooling and graduation at SLBS College, Gonda, with a degree in political science.

In 2013, Verma took a significant step by enrolling in the LLB programme at Narvadeshwar Vidhi Mahavidyalaya, Lucknow, setting the stage for his journey into the field of law. Balancing rigorous studies with a full-time job as a security guard at RMLNLU, Verma’s unwavering determination propelled him forward. His interest in law was ignited by an article on the fundamental rights of Indian citizens, inspiring him to delve deeper into the subject.

Verma’s commitment to education came with significant sacrifices. Working night shifts at the mall, commuting over 100 km by train for classes, and facing challenges like train delays due to fog became part of his routine. His relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to work at a cyber cafe and take on part-time roles to support his family.

In 2014, Verma began working full-time as a security guard at RMLNLU while continuing to study for his LLB after midnight. The turning point arrived when fellow students discovered his dual life as a guard and a law student. Initiating a crowdfunding campaign, RMLNLU students raised over Rs 20,000 to cover both college and AIBE registration fees, providing crucial support for Verma to finally write the bar exam.

Now residing in Lucknow with his wife and four daughters, Verma envisions a better life after successfully clearing the AIBE. Despite becoming a lawyer and practicing under a Lucknow civil court lawyer, financial challenges persist.

In a candid conversation, Verma revealed that he continues to work part-time at a cyber cafe to support his family, emphasizing that his current income falls short. In this role, he types court files for a senior lawyer, enabling him to earn money that would otherwise benefit others.

Expressing regret for not confiding in anyone at RMLNLU about his aspiration to become a lawyer, Verma stressed the importance of having a goal and never giving up on one’s dreams. He highlighted the significance of openly sharing problems, citing his own experience where sharing his challenges with RMLNLU students led to crucial assistance. Verma urged others not to delay sharing their aspirations, acknowledging that timely sharing might have shortened the waiting period for his success.
